한국 과학기술 영문 포털 사이트 KoreaScience 오픈

한국의 과학기술 성과를 알리는 방법은 전세계 사람들이 접근하기 쉬운 사이트를 만드는 것과 영문으로 된 정보를 많이 노출시키는 것이다. 이번에 KISTI에서 외국 연구자들이 쉽게 접근할 수 있도록 영문으로 된 한국 과학기술 포털사이트인 Korea Science를 오픈한 것은 늦었지만 다행스러운 일이다.
작년에는 국내 8개의 학회지가 저작권을 외국출판사에 넘긴 일을 계기로 학술지의 주권 상실 문제가 KBS 취재파일 4321에 보도된 적이 있다. 국내 학회지에 실린 학술논문은 해외 출판사의 저널에 실리는 것보다 노출이나 피인용의 가능성이 적기 때문에 외국출판사에 출간되기 위해 저작권을 넘기는 일이 발생한 것이다. 이 때문에 국내의 학술논문을 외국에 저작권을 지불하면서 구독해야 하는 역수입의 문제가 대두되었다.
하지만 우리의 학술논문을 전세계에 무료로  알릴 수 있는 영문 포털사이트의 오픈으로 인해 이런 문제는 줄어들지 않을까 생각해본다. 더불어, 글로벌 과학포털사이트인 WorldWideScience.org에도 추가되어 검색의 노출이 확대될 수 있는 교두보를 확보했다.

주요 컨텐츠를 살펴보면,

현재까지 50여개의 과학분야 학회에서 나온 66개 학회지의 5,000여건에 달하는 학술논문을 오픈 액세스 기반으로 제공하고 있다. 2008년 중반까지 80여개의 학회지로 컨텐츠를 확대 수록할 예정이라고 한다. 이외에도 과학기술 분야의 학회 및 협회 그리고 연구소들의 디렉토리를 제공한다.
